Digital Methods and Periodical Infrastructures DHOxSS 26

Posted on 28/08/202619/10/2026

I attended the Digital Humanities @ Oxford Summer School (DHOxSS) from 24 to 28 August. The experience reshaped my perspective on digital humanities research on illustrated periodicals. Although I participated online, the course was engaging and inspiring. The central takeaway was straightforward: the tools we deploy to examine historical materials determine which questions become legible and which remain invisible.

Digital humanities approaches help reveal the scale of circulation networks, editorial decisions, visual and material transfers, and archival infrastructures. This is particularly useful for my research and for the Magazine Matter project I recently co-founded on periodicals as transnational infrastructures of visual knowledge. Their visuality, materiality, and circulation modes shaped how readers encountered and produced visual knowledge. Analysing these elements at scale reveals insights that would take years to uncover by examining individual images or spreads.

The course also highlighted a critical gap: text-based metadata and descriptions do not capture printing techniques, tactile qualities, layouts, or visual relationships in periodicals. Addressing this gap is essential.

DHOxSS has opened promising research directions for my future work.
I wish I could attend every year.
