Annie Carpenter is a Lecturer in Fine Art and visual artist whose research explores how art can create the conditions for meaningful exchange between art and science.
As part of her practice-based PhD with the Cultural Negotiation of Science research group at Northumbria University, Annie uses research-driven art practice to disrupt the standard terrains (physical and social) of the working cultures surrounding both art and science. Her aim is to propose new models for cross-disciplinary exchange. She is founder of an artist–scientist collective in Manchester that creates alternative learning environments that circumvent the short-term, outcome-driven imperatives of both academia and the art world, operating within the sphere of para-academia. Through this collective, she curates outdoor excursions, drawing on notions of wild awe and correspondence. The excursions remove participants from their siloed institutions and foster shared experiences situated at the boundary of work and leisure.
In her studio practice, Annie employs amateur labour in a haptic-driven pursuit of scientific knowledge, often in the form of mechanical sculptures. She periodically brings these DIY methods into performative demonstrations, giving the viewer an intimate, two-way encounter with the themes behind her work.
