Using design thinking to build capacity for just transitions to renewables – by Dr Anne Schiffer

Posted on 28/04/202525/06/2025

As part of a research consultancy for Friends of the Earth International, Dr Anne Schiffer led on the development of the ‘Yes to renewables done right’ online learning module to build capacity of internal stakeholders. The module flow is structured around the ‘double diamond’: 1) learners begin to ‘discover’ key energy transition concepts that underpin energy (in)justice such as energy extractivism and energy sufficiency; 2) the ‘define’ includes learning more about the conceptualisation of just transitions and the articulation of a personal just transition challenge question; 3) then learners begin to ‘develop’ responses to their just transition challenge questions supported by inputs related to energy in the hands of people and circular systems of energy products and materials. 4) The final week includes time for reflection with a view to ‘deliver’ or begin to implement plans through learners professional roles going forward

The full handbook was developed following a pilot and is available here:
